A summer full of colorful fruits
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Servings: 2 servings
Calories: 163 kcal
Ingredients:
½ cup oat, coconut, or nut-based milk;
¼ cup plain, Greek, or plant-based yogurt;
1 cup of fresh fruit;
2 cups frozen fruit;
1-2 spoons of sweetener;
optional ingredients: nuts, seeds, spices, oats or protein powder.
Why add frozen fruit?
Frozen fruit is an essential ingredient for creating a thick smoothie. If you decide not to add it to your smoothie, expect that instead of a thick mushy consistency, you will have a more liquid drink. You can either buy already frozen fruit from your grocery store or freeze fresh fruit, but make sure it has been in the freezer for at least 4-5 hours.
Sweeten your smoothie. Some of the best sweeteners to add to smoothies include:
agave nectar,
pure maple syrup,
liquid stevia extract,
coconut nectar.
Optional ingredients
nuts and butters (peanuts, almonds, cashews),
seeds (chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds),
oils (fish oil, linseed oil, cod liver oil),
eggs,
protein powder (unflavored or sweetened),
spirulina powder,
citrus peel (limes, lemons, oranges)
spices (turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg, cayenne),
puree (pumpkin, sweet potato).
And much more!
Approach:
Pour the liquid and add the yogurt.
Then add fresh fruit. Then fresh bananas, berries or even avocados are added.
Toss in the leafy greens.
Add frozen fruit. Make sure you let it thaw for 5-10 minutes before adding.
Add the ingredients of your choice to the blender.
Mix everything. Start with the blender on low to break up the ingredients into smaller pieces. Then add to speed and blend until everything is smooth and creamy.
Serving
No smoothie would be complete without a fun straw to sip it from! There are so many different types you can use:
paper straws
bamboo straws – a great option for reuse
metal straws – they can be rinsed and reused
plastic straws – not the most eco-friendly option, but if you buy the bigger ones you can easily rinse them and reuse them
Tips and tricks
The avocado can be replaced with a banana along with a tablespoon or two of sweetener.
If you are mildly lactose intolerant, goat’s milk yogurt is a great alternative that tastes very similar.
If you use plant-based milk, here are some recommended ones to use: oat, almond, soy, coconut or cashew milk.
You’d be surprised how sweet fruit can be! Before adding any other sweeteners to your smoothie, taste it or you may end up making it too sweet.
If you run out of milk, you can add orange juice, apple juice and even water. However, your smoothie will then be a bit more icy than creamy.
If you’re not a fan of bananas in smoothies, you can always replace them with avocado. However, you will need to add a little extra sweetener to replace the naturally sweet taste of the banana.
There is no need to add ice to the smoothie. Ice actually makes the smoothie more thick than smooth and also dulls the flavor of the fruit. Use frozen fruit instead of ice to get a slushy consistency.
